Doyle Lawson on the side of the Tennessee Welcome Center – photo © John Maye
The next time you visit the Tennessee Welcome Center on I-26 near Kingsport (exit 5), you will be greeted by a larger-than-life mural of bluegrass superstar Doyle Lawson’s face!
The mural, painted on the side of the building, is a creation of Kingsport artist John Maye, and also includes a likeness of songwriter and guitarist Lesley Riddle, a close associate of A.P. Carter, and a native of Kingsport. Lawson, of course, is another famous native of the region.
No bluegrass fan needs an introduction to Doyle Lawson, or his music. From his early days with Jimmy Martin and J.D. Crowe, through his memorable stint with The Country Gentlemen, and through his 42 years leading Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, he has become one of the most beloved figures in the music, with dozens of successful recordings to prove it.
I’m sure Doyle will be making a trip out to the 1-26 Welcome Center to take his picture with the mural, if he hasn’t already.
Maye has also painted a mural that features Ralph Peer and Jimmie Rodgers at the Welcome Center in Unicoi County at exit 24 on I-26. You can see more of his work online.
Congratulations Doyle!
