Anyone who followed old time music in the 1970s remembers Highwoods String Band. They were a staple at acoustic music festivals of all kinds, and had a number of successful albums during the early days of Rounder Records.
Their live shows were fun and unpredictable, and brought traditional mountain music styles to the attention of a younger, more affluent audience that had followed it previously. Original members Walt Koken and Mac Benford are considered as icons in old time music, and rightly so.
Now their music is set to be the subject of a documentary film project from Horse Archer Productions, the same outfit that created the Why Old Time feature-length documentary in 2009. All of the band’s original members will be involved in the production, under the direction of Sean Kotz and Chris Valluzzo.
They are using IndieGoGo as a crowdsouring platform to raise the necessary capital to start production. They estimate that the Highwoods project, and a companion film on the Green Grass Cloggers from that same era, can be produced for a total budget of $25,000, and are offering copies of their existing project DVDs and pre-production sales of the new ones as premiums for pledging online.
