Paper Airplane takes off April 12

Rounder Records has announced April 12 as the release date for Paper Airplane, the long-anticipated new album from Alison Krauss & Union Station. This will be the first band project since 2004, and the first since Alison’s genre-bending, mega-hit album with Robert Plant, Raising Sand, in 2007.

This record has been in the works for some time, with production starting as far back as the summer of 2009. Ever the perfectionist, we understand that much of the music recorded at the start of the process was scrapped, as it failed to live up to Alison’s expectations. It would seem that she and her AKUS brethren have completed something they are happy with, and now we have only to wait.

Given her tremendous success in recent years, a lot of attention will be paid to Paper Airplane by the music industry at large, waiting to see what sort of sales will accompany “our” Alison’s return to the acoustic/bluegrass setting. I’ve never known her to disappoint on an artistic level, and we will be very interested in how this plays out as well.

Rounder created this short video promo to build anticipation for the April release.

We’ll try to get some more information about the music on Paper Airplane, and will report back with what we learn.
