A veteran performer and radio host at only 28 years of age, Alex Leach is a true phenomenon in bluegrass music.
His broadcasting career began at WDVX in 1999, at only nine years old, when he impressed station manager Tony Lawson with his bluegrass knowledge, showing up to the camper where the station then resided. Leach’s grandpa brought him down each week to cohost with Lawson, and Alex has since been twice named as SPBGMA’s Bluegrass DJ of The Year.
We saw him for several years on banjo with Ralph Stanley II, and was a member of the Clinch Mountain Boys when II took it over after his father’s passing. And he wrote what may go down as among the most iconic and stylistically perfect bluegrass songs in existence in Mountain Heartache, which he sang regularly with Ralph.
Leach fronted his own Alex Leach Band for a time, and released a pair of albums, but is now the “old guy” in Wyatt Ellis’ band, playing guitar.
He continues to write and record under his own name, with a new single set to release later this month, Morning Green, one he composed, and the initial drop of a number of new songs set to hit in the near future.
As Leach describes it…
“Morning Green is the first of many original songs I am so proud to share with everyone. I feel like my songwriting has taken a very personal direction over the last couple of years, and I have really been pouring my soul into everything I put on paper. To me, singing a song that I have created myself just fuels the energy to put my heart into every note I play and sing, and I hope the listener can feel that when they listen.”
Alex plays guitar, banjo, and bass, and sings the lead vocal, supported by Wyatt Ellis on mandolin and Noah Goebel on fiddle. His wife, Miranda Leach, adds vocal harmony.
