Merle Haggard CD to be released by McCoury Music

We just got word that the Merle Haggard bluegrass CD we told you about last month is set to be released on Del McCoury’s imprint, McCoury Music, jointly with Hag Music.

Chris Harris with Rainmaker Management (Del’s media relations) shared this bit of info.

“What I’ve heard so far sounds great. Ronnie Reno produced (obviously he has the bluegrass pedigree and he was a member of Mr. Haggard’s band for about 12 years so he was a great fit) and they brought in some great pickers (Marty Stuart, Carl Jackson, Rob Ickes, Charlie Cushman, Aubrey Haynie and Ben Isaac).”

More details are expected to be announced later this week.

PU. Merle Haggard doing a “Pickin’ On” album is a sign of the apocalypse isn’t it? He’s great, but that is sad. Thumbs down. Bad idea.

I agree. That’s not something I would want, or get for anybody else. Oh no! I think I see 4 horses on the horizon!!!!!

  • Don’t be so quick to make a judgment. I know some folks who worked on the project and are pretty reliable in their opinion of good music. It’s not an attempt at a straight ahead Bluegrass disc, more along the lines of acoustic Hag….who’s songs have been covered by some very high profile and accomplished Bluegrass groups BTW….so I think I’ll wait and give a close listen first. The word I got was, it’s fantstic.

I know the same people. They said it sucked too. They also don’t know a “Dennis Jones.” Get a better fake name. Nobody’s believing your bs Stan/Chris. We bluegrassers aren’t as stupid as you tell everyone we are.

  • Grasshead145, I would suggest you do a little research before casting stones my friend. Dennis is a regular contributor here at Bluegrass Today who often sends us news stories for publication. If you were to simply click on his name in one of his comments you would be taken to the website of WNCW, the radio station at which he works, and could easily find a photo of him and a short bio.

I don’t know much about the CD in question, but I seem to remember John telling me that Rob Ickes played on the session and thought it was pretty cool. I won’t easily discount that testimony. This CD will be what it is, and that won’t be a strait ahead grass album I’m sure, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be good music.

I heard some rough mixes a few weeks ago. Good stuff, and most of the songs on the album are new.
