Fiddler Carl Nelson passes away

Event Details

Carl Nelson passed away 11/01/2006We just heard the sad news that fiddler Carl Nelson passed away this morning. Carl worked with Bill Harrell & The Virginians for a number of years in addition to playing fiddle on numerous bluegrass recording projects, and performing with such bluegrass notables as the Country Gentlemen, Buzz Busby, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and Don Reno.

Our current info tells us the funeral will be scheduled at Gasch Funeral Home in Hyattsville, MD.

Carl pulled the most beautiful tone from his fiddle and was a great singer, too. On school nights, before Eddie Stubbs graduated from high school, Carl was often a fiddler with the early Johnson Mountain Boys. He was also a soft spoken and very kind man. He will surely be missed as one of Washington’s most accomplished bluegrass pioneers.
