Banjo band – boon or bane?

We Banjo 3Our friends at ukbluegrass.com have really started a ruckus…

In their post about We Banjo 3, an Irish quartet, they once again raise the spectre of the banjo band. The group features 3 – and sometimes 4 – banjos playing at once, mixing playing styles and genres as they go.

The group began with brothers Martin and David Howley, along with Enda Scahill. All three play various banjos, guitars and mandolins, and the band name was taken from the triple banjo format. They have since added Leon Hunt, a 5 string player, giving them even more options – and volume – in the stage show.

All banjo teasing aside, the four pickers are all quite accomplished, and judging from this YouTube clip, offer a highly entertaining show.

More video clips are available on their web site.

At this point, We Banjo 3 seems to be only doing shows in England and Ireland. Perhaps a US festival might see fit to bring them across for a tour in the States?
