New from Dark Shadow Recording is another single from Chicagoland bluegrass siblings Soraya and Luciya Sullivan, i.e., The Sullivan Sisters, and their fine young band. All are still student musicians, three at the Berklee College of music in Boston, one at Belmont in Nashville, and one still in high school.
This latest is Cold Front, written by guitarist and vocalist Soraya with Tim Stafford earlier this year. It reflects the winter season of its origins, with references to frigid temperatures amid a story of failed romance.
Soraya says that it turned out even better than they had expected.
“This one was fun to record, because our producer, Stephen Mougin, ‘pushed us’ to improvise in the studio. That was my favorite moment. Instead of working up solos, we created a jam section that everyone improvised over, which brought a new and interesting sound to the song.”
With Soraya on guitar and Luciya on banjo, we also hear Finn McGuinness on fiddle, Gabe Zinser on mandolin, and Sammy Mougin on bass. Family harmony is supplemented by Sammy singing the third part.

The song will also be included on The Sullivan Sisters’ debut album, expected in February 2027 from Dark Shadow.
Look for them at the World of Bluegrass convention this October in Chattanooga as well, where Luciya is nominated for a Momentum Instrumentalist Award.
