Laura Orshaw recovering from cancer surgery

Event Details

Laura Orshaw

Popular bluegrass fiddler and vocalist Laura Orshaw is home recovering after undergoing a double mastectomy on May 22. She had recently received a diagnosis of breast cancer, and she and her physicians decided to take an aggressive approach.

A Pennsylvania native, Laura initially made her mark in New England, living in Cambridge, MA. She signed with Dark Shadow Recording and released an album, Solitary Diamond, in 2022, and worked as a member of Alan Bibey & Grasstowne. Laura then toured for several years as a member of The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys, until she and guitarist Josh Rinkel left the group, got married, and settled in Mount Eden, KY.

Last week Orshaw shared this message about her situation.

“I wanted to share a personal health update with my friends and music community. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully it was caught very early, and yesterday I underwent a double mastectomy. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have an excellent medical team, and the surgery went well.

Josh and I have been surrounded by so much love and support from the very beginning, and we’re deeply grateful. I’ve got a few months of treatment ahead, so I’ll be laying low for a bit, but I’m looking forward to being back, visiting with you all and making music again as soon and I can!”

Laura’s friend, Boston banjo picker B.B. Bowness, has organized a Meal Train fundraiser to arrange for the Rinkels food to be delivered for the first few weeks after surgery. Laura said that it has been a huge help, and thanks everyone for their help. Donations can be made online.

As soon as she feels up to it, Laura will return to performing with Michael Prewitt & Crunchgrass Supreme. She and Josh also play together as First Far West.

Get well, and feel better soon, Laura!
