John Showman, superb Canadian old time fiddler and vocalist, and one half of the Lonesome Ace Stringband and the power duo of Showman & Coole, is undergoing rehab now following a serious fall at home on April 20. He spent several days in the hospital where he was diagnosed as having suffered two fractured vertebrae.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with expenses during the time he is unable to teach or perform, particularly the cost of the projected six months of rehab, and the income to help support his wife and two children for the duration.
Music lovers are always quick to contribute to endeavors such as this, as they understand that one of the things that a musical artist sacrifices to dedicate themselves to performing and teaching is the sort of stable income and financial predictability that comes with a regular “day job.”
In this case, the campaign, established by John’s friend, Ontario violin builder and restorer Luke Mercier, has raised more than double the initial goal of $22,000, a testament to the generosity of those who support traditional music. Despite beating and doubling the goal, additional donations would surely be deeply appreciated.
Contributions can be pledged online by major credit card, or payment services such as PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfers with confidence and security.
