I’m Going Back to Old Kentucky #6

From October 1, 2010 through to the end of September 2011, we will, each day, celebrate the life of Bill Monroe by sharing information about him and those people who are associated with his life and music career. This information will include births and deaths; recording sessions; single, LP and CD release dates; and other interesting tidbits. Richard F. Thompson is responsible for the research and compilation of this information. We invite readers to share any tidbits, photos or memories you would like us to include.

  • October 6, 1948 – Byron Parker died in Providence Hospital, Richland County, South Carolina, of a heart attack. He was aged 37. *
  • October 6, 1969 – Single released – Fireball Mail/With Body and Soul (Decca 7 – 32574, 45rpm)
  • October 6, 1986 – Art Wooten died after a long illness in Sparta, North Carolina, age 80.

* Byron Parker worked with Bill and Charlie Monroe until their partnership ended, doing a variety of odd jobs. He worked with Snuffy Jenkins and Pappy Sherill thereafter.

His role with The Monroe Brothers has been described as “half-disc jockey and half-frontman vocalist.”
