Don Rigsby stepping away from Balsam Range

Event Details

Balsam Range

Balsam Range has announced that Don Rigsby, who has been filling ion with them of late on fiddle since founding member Buddy Melton’s departure, will be stepping away from the group to focus on his own band, Southern Legacy.

Coming in to handle fiddle and tenor vocals is Stephen Hudson, another powerful bluegrass singer.

The Balsams shared this statement yesterday about the switch.

“We want to share an update that’s both a note of gratitude and the start of a new chapter.

After more than a year with the band, Don Rigsby will be stepping away to focus on Southern Legacy. We’ve truly enjoyed our time together—making great music, sharing plenty of laughs, and building lasting friendships. Don, you’ve left a real mark on us, not just as a band, but as friends. We’re incredibly grateful for everything you’ve brought to this group, and wish you nothing but the best moving forward. It’s not a goodbye—just the turning of a page.

At the same time, we’re excited to welcome Stephen Hudson into the fold. Stephen, we’re glad you’re here, and appreciate the energy and perspective you’re already bringing. It feels like the beginning of a new chapter, and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead together.”

For his part, Hudson is delighted to be a part of Balsam Range.

“To say that I’m excited about this is a massive understatement! We’ve been fans of Balsam Range for almost 20 years now, and I can’t wait to see what this chapter of life has in store! These guys are a blast to pick and hang out with, and it’s been an honor to work with the legendary Don Rigsby some as well during this past year!

I never dreamed that I would have this opportunity, but God is good, and He’s worked out so many details to make it possible.

Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive and encouraging. I hope to see y’all at some of our upcoming shows!”

He joins Marc Pruett on banjo, Caleb Smith on guitar, Tim Surrett on bass, and Alan Bibey on mandolin.

They’ll be performing with this new lineup tomorrow at the Woodstock Arts Theatre in Woodstock, GA. Tickets are available online.
