Acoustic bass DVD from Barry Bales

AcuTab is set to release the first instructional DVD for one of the most celebrated pickers in bluegrass music.

Barry Bales – A Solid Approach To Acoustic Bass is set for an April 27 release. Bales is well-known for his work with Alison Krauss & Union Station, and recently as a member of the celebrated Dan Tyminski Band. He has appeared on almost 150 bluegrass, pop and country releases and you’ll see his name on so many influential acoustic CDs that it is fair to call him the go-to guy for acoustic bass in Nashville.

On his new DVD, Barry shares his thoughts on the appropriate role of the bass, and demonstrates many of the techniques that have made him a first call musician in both bluegrass and country music. AcuTab’s John Lawless leads Barry through a discussion of his background and influences before they move on to songs. Barry also covers important topics like tone production, walking bass, percussive ‘ghost’ notes, and more.

The DVD runs 2 hours and 20 minutes and comes with a printed booklet (tab and standard notation) for the music he demonstrates in the video. Over the course of the presentation, he runs through some popular songs and jam standards, each selected to show some important aspect of tasteful bass playing. Songs and tunes include Banks Of The Ohio, Kentucky Waltz, Fireball Mail, Wayfaring Stranger, Groundhog, Rebecca, East Tennessee Blues, Blackberry Blossom, and Everytime You Say Goodbye.
