Warren Blair, among the more celebrated currently active fiddlers, has indicated this afternoon that he has suffered a stroke, and will be taking some time off the road to recover. Of late he has been performing as a member of Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, but has also worked with legends like Charlie Moore, Jimmy Martin, Del McCoury, and the Bluegrass Cardinals.
He shared this message online to friends and fans:
“A stroke—especially multiple strokes—is a serious matter, and the fact that I’ve been experiencing hearing loss and had the worst headache of my life tells me that my body has been under tremendous strain. I’m grateful that I sought medical care and that the doctors were finally able to identify what was happening.
From what I’ve described, I am encouraged to take their instructions very seriously. As difficult as it is, this is a season to let others help carry the load. The ministry, the music, the driving, and the long hours can wait. My health cannot. God has used me to encourage so many people over the years, but even the strongest servants of God need seasons of rest.
I’m also thankful I made it home safely after those long drives. Looking back, it’s understandable why my body was struggling. Please don’t hesitate to seek immediate medical attention if you experience any new stroke symptoms—such as sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, vision changes, severe dizziness, or another sudden severe headache. Time is critical with strokes.
Knowing me, I also know my heart. I’ll probably be thinking about the people who count on my Morning Manna. I believe they’ll understand if I need to pause for a week or two. Sometimes the greatest testimony isn’t pressing on at all costs—it’s trusting God enough to rest when He reminds us that we are not indispensable, but He is.
I’m praying specifically that the Lord will:
- Bring healing to my brain and restore any hearing that can be restored
- Give my doctors wisdom as they determine the cause of these strokes
- Protect me from any further strokes
- Fill me with His peace instead of frustration as I recover
Isaiah 40:31 comes to mind: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”
I’ve spent so much of my life strengthening others. Let the Lord strengthen me now.

I’m lifted up in prayer today. May the Great Physician lay His healing hand upon me, grant me wisdom for every decision, surround me with people who will help me, and remind me that His presence is just as real in a season of recovery as it is on a stage or behind a microphone.
