New single time for Bronwyn, celebrated fiddler, vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader. She has brought forth an original song called Johnny Ray, a somber look at the depths into which one can sink through substance abuse and addiction.
It doesn’t take everyone who experiments with that dark side, but it is sad and a bit desperate to see it happening. Bronwyn describes it as “the helpless feeling of watching someone you love down, and being unable to stop it from happening.”
On the track with Bronwyn, who fiddles and sings lead, we have Jerry Douglas on reso-guitar, Bryan Sutton on guitar, Wes Corbett on banjo, Dominick Leslie on mandolin, Jeff Picker on bass, and Miles Miller on drums.
Bronwyn doesn’t have a traditional bluegrass voice, and this isn’t a traditional bluegrass song, but it has an urgency that is very compelling, and shows why she is becoming a leader on the independent modern bluegrass scene.
Have a listen.
Johnny Ray is available now from popular download and streaming services online, and to radio programmers via AirPlay Direct.
It will be included on Bronwyn’s upcoming album, Sticks and Stones, due for an August 14 release.
