This report from Galax is a contribution from Ed Oakes, father of young fiddler Hollace Oakes.
Monday evening marked Youth Night at the 90th Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention, and while rain clouds lingered overhead throughout the evening, the weather ultimately cooperated. Aside from a few brief periods of light mist, the rain stayed away, creating an extremely comfortable night for musicians and spectators alike.
As always, Youth Night showcased an incredible mix of young bluegrass and old-time talent. Musicians from across the region took the stage, delivering high quality performances that have become a hallmark of this annual event.
Taking top honors in the Youth Band competition was Found and Lost, a special collaboration featuring members of the bands Denim & Plaid and Carolina Detour.
Youth Night has long been one of the highlights of the Galax convention, offering a glimpse into the future of traditional music. The 90th Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention continues throughout the week with daily competitions featuring contestants from across the country. The week closes Friday and Saturday nights with the Adult Bluegrass and Old-Time Band competitions, which always feature an outstanding lineup of bands and musicians.
