Rick Lang occupies an unusual niche in the bluegrass world; a songwriter who doesn’t sing, but yet has been signed to work with a number of prominent labels as an artist over recent years. He has released many singles, and a number of albums, under his name, bringing in noted vocalists to interpret the songs he writes.
The latest is a song especially for Memorial Day, Field of Flags, which is sung by Dave Adkins. Both men share a particular respect for those who have served in the United States military, and here referencing service members who have given their life. One thing Americans of every political stripe unite around is admiration for those who follow orders into danger on behest of of civilian leaders, and Rick and Dave have brought us something to agree upon as we approach this annual remembrance.
Lang says that he put a lot into this one.
“I wrote Field Of Flags with my songwriting buddy Jack White to honor those who served and gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. My grandad, my dad, and my brother George all served their country in times of conflict. When I see pictures of them in full uniform, it makes me so proud.
My goal was to have Field Of Flags ready to celebrate this Memorial Day, during the year of our country’s 250th Anniversary. It is my hope that this song is a fitting tribute to those brave souls who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
And so he has. Supporting Adkins is producer and engineer Jared Easter, who plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, fiddle, and reso-guitar on the track. Lyla Cantafio sings harmony vocals.
Rick is offering free downloads of the track on his web site.
