Devil’s Got A Hold On You from The Sullivan Sisters

The Sullivan Sisters

The debut release from The Sullivan Sisters, of Chicago via Winston-Salem, is now available from Dark Shadow Recording. The newest members of the Dark Shadow Family, the Sullivan Sisters, still in their teens, have turned heads wherever they perform for their instrumental, vocal, and songwriting abilities.

The girls were born in North Carolina, where they began their study of bluegrass and Appalachian music, though they now reside in Evanston, IL where they had moved with their family.

Banjo player Luciya Sullivan sings Devil’s Got A Hold On You, a song she wrote with her older, guitar-playing sister, Soraya, who adds harmony vocals. It’s a fictional story of shame and vengeance told from the perspective of the spouse of a killer.

Luciya says that the idea came to her as she was learning to play old time banjo.

“It was a really special thing to be able to bring this song to my sister and write it together, which we had never done before. I started writing the song one night over the winter last year when I first started learning clawhammer banjo. The revenge seeking, haunting vibe was loosely inspired by Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch.

I brought the mostly finished song to Soraya and we had a really fun time finishing it together.”

Support comes from their touring band, Finn McGuinness on fiddle, Gabe Zinser on mandolin, and Sammy Mougin on bass.

It’s a mighty impressive debut. Check it out.

Devil’ Got A Hold On You is available now from popular download and streaming services online, and to radio programmers via AirPlay Direct and Get It Played.
