Pinecastle Records has a debut single from Ashleigh Graham & Appalachian Highway, taken from their upcoming album with the label.
Diligent readers may recall another project Ashleigh released with Pinecastle, but now that she has assembled her own band, this next recording will be a group effort. With Graham on mandolin, Appalachian Highway includes Jason Fraley on guitar, Steve Wilson on banjo, and Will Potts on bass.
For the first taste of the band, Ashleigh has selected Pinewood Prison, which came to her from Mark Brinkman and Paula Breedlove. The song tells of a woman who was born in prison, and grew up with no memories of her mother.
Graham says that she was in from the start.
“I immediately connected with the story/song when I heard it. My first thought was, ‘Oh my gosh! That’s a ‘Musical Taylor Sheridan style spin-off’ from my song As Good As Dead! I have to record that!’
Produced by Steve Wilson, the arrangement serves as the perfect backdrop to the story, painting rich colorful images that capture the soul of Pinewood Prison.”
The melody and arrangement are appropriately dark to suit the song, but expect a twist or two along the way as the story unfolds. Glen Crain kicks off the track providing guest reso-guitar.
Have a listen.
Pinewood Prison is available now from popular download and streaming services online, and to radio programmers via AirPlay Direct.
