Jason Roberts

The National Fiddler Hall of Fame recently celebrated the many contributions of Jason Roberts, a distinguished fiddler and member of the legendary Texas Playboys, during their annual induction ceremony. This honor not only highlights Roberts’ exceptional talent and dedication to the art of fiddling, but also pays tribute to the rich legacy of the Texas Playboys, a band that has played a pivotal role in shaping western swing music. As Roberts takes his place among the greats in the Hall of Fame, we reflect on his journey, the impact of Wills and the Texas Playboys, and the enduring significance of fiddling in American music culture.

Founded in 2012 by Bob Fjelsted to celebrate the traditions of fiddle music and honor the artists who have significantly contributed to its evolution, the National Fiddler Hall of Fame serves as both a tribute and a museum of the mind, showcasing the incredible talent across various genres from bluegrass to western swing. Not only does it preserve the past, it also inspires future generations of fiddlers.

Each year the selection committee looks for individuals who have not only tickled the strings but also touched the hearts of audiences with their artistry, creativity, and dedication to music. Board Members of the Hall of Fame, Bob Fjelsted, Jana Jae, and Larry Barto, were on hand for the presentation.

Jason Roberts was born and raised in the musical heartland of Texas, and was perhaps destined for a life in music. Growing up surrounded by the sounds of traditional country, swing, and rockabilly, he picked up the fiddle at a young age, inspired by legends like Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. As a boy, Jason could often be found at Ace Sewell’s home, which was south of Oklahoma City in the small rural town of Alex, Oklahoma. I’ve been told that Ace was insistent on practice, and made certain that the fiddlers who came to his farm to learn, left with new knowledge that was implanted like seed in a wheat field. Roberts’ early exposure to these vibrant musical styles set the stage for his unique fusion of sound that marries tradition with innovation.

Jason’s career reads like a Texas-sized dream come true. As a member of the Texas Playboys, he has not only played with some of the finest musicians, but also became a prominent figure in the western swing revival. His skillful playing has graced stages everywhere, from honky-tonks to major festivals, and he’s known for his energetic performances that keep audiences dancing in their boots.

With the bow in hand and a smile on his face, Jason has garnered numerous awards, including Texas Fiddler of the Year accolades, as well as two Grammys. His dedication to the craft has not only won him fans but also solidified his role as a fiddle ambassador, promoting the joy and cultural significance of fiddling wherever he goes.

Jason was blessed by the Bob Wills family when he was asked to take over the “Ah AH” at the microphone famously begun by Wills himself, and become the band leader of The Texas Playboys. In addition he has been traveling with Asleep at the Wheel for over 20 years.

The Texas Playboys kicked off their musical journey in the late 1930s, driven by the genius of Bob Wills. Initially a small ensemble, they quickly grew into a full-blown big band, featuring legendary talents like Tommy Duncan and Leon McAuliffe. This vibrant collective of musicians brought western swing into the spotlight, melding country, jazz, and blues in a way that was as refreshing as sweet tea on a hot Texas day.

Wills’ fusion of various musical styles set a new standard in the genre, influencing countless artists across generations. Their innovative approach to rhythm and harmony helped establish western swing as a legitimate musical form, and their infectious energy continues to inspire fiddlers, guitarists, and singers alike.

With enduring hits like San Antonio Rose and Take me Back to Tulsa, the Texas Playboys have an impressive discography that has not only stood the test of time but also remains a staple in the musical lexicon. Their live performances are the stuff of legend, often featuring spontaneous jams that showcase their immense talent and chemistry. Each show is a celebration, and their recordings often capture the lively essence of these unforgettable concerts.

The induction ceremony for Jason Roberts at the National Fiddler Hall of Fame was a momentous occasion, taking place at the illustrious Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, OK. It promised to be a weekend filled with lively music, heartfelt speeches, and a few happy tears as fans and fellow musicians gathered to honor one of their own.

Carolyn Wills, Bob’s daughter, welcomed Jason as the induction began on March 7.

The music community rolled out the red carpet for Jason Roberts, and it wasn’t just for the shiny shoes. Fellow musicians applauded his induction into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame, recognizing him as a trailblazer in the fiddling world. Esteemed fiddlers and bandmates expressed their admiration, acknowledging his contributions as not only a performer, but also a guardian of tradition and innovation.

Fans were in full celebration mode, with social media buzzing like a beehive injected with espresso. Posts and tweets were filled with congratulations and reminiscences of unforgettable performances. It’s a testament to how Roberts’ music resonates with listeners, transcending generations and even geographical boundaries. Many have shared their personal stories of how his music has impacted their lives.

Then, on Monday, March 9, the state of Oklahoma honored Bob Wills on what would have been his 120th birthday. Held in the rotunda of the state capital, bands were scheduled throughout the day, and the marble floor became a dancehall, as echoes of yesteryear resonated throughout the entire complex.

As expected, a star-studded lineup at the ceremony, with fellow fiddlers, musicians, and music lovers, eagerly paid their  respects. Among the notable attendees were members of the Texas Playboys, country music legends, Brazos Valley Boys, Katie Shore, Jana Jae, the queen of the fiddle, and Oklahoma Swing, which includes three of the late Byron Berline’s band, and the only surviving member of the original Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Joe Settlemires.

On a side note, Joe no longer tours with the Texas Playboys, but is very active within the state of Oklahoma, and can be seen at different venues, including Reba’s Place alongside Pake McEntire. Captivating performances that blended nostalgia with fresh energy, created three nights that will be remembered long after the last bow stroke.

Jason Roberts is known for blending traditional fiddling techniques with fingerpicking and rhythm guitar elements. His unique style incorporates influences from bluegrass, country, and western swing, making his performances a delightful audio cocktail that keeps listeners coming back for more. Roberts’ ability to push boundaries while respecting the roots of fiddling has set him apart in the musical landscape.

Roberts is also passionate about sharing his love for fiddling with the next generation. He conducts workshops and masterclasses that break down complex techniques into digestible bites—because nobody likes an overly complicated recipe. By mentoring young musicians, he ensures that the art of fiddling continues to flourish. His approachable teaching style and infectious enthusiasm inspire students to explore their creativity, making music accessible and fun.

Jason Roberts’ induction into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame is certainly a personal accolade, but it’s also a celebration of the vibrant tradition of fiddling itself. His inventive spirit and dedication to the craft have left an indelible mark on both the Texas Playboys and the larger fiddling community. By inspiring young musicians and infusing fresh ideas into the fiddling genre, Jason Roberts is paving the way for future generations to explore their musical passions.

His contributions are a reminder that tradition need not be stagnant; it can evolve, be reimagined, and flourish. Thanks to Roberts and the Texas Playboys, the future of fiddling is bright and buzzing with possibility, ensuring the sweet sounds will echo for years to come.
