Woodbine Opry in Georgia

Event Details

woodbineWhile many in the bluegrass world were in Nashville taking in the events at SPBGMA, small local venues were continuing their shows.

One such venue is the Woodbine Opry. The Woodbine Opry is located in Woodbine, Georgia north of Jacksonville, Florida. The Opry was started by Hoydt Drury in 2001 as a fund raiser for maintaining the old Woodbine School. The show supports the old school with a 50/50 and a dessert raffle. Hoydt serves as emcee and is one of the pickers. The Opry has grown into a two night operation. Friday night is bluegrass and Saturday night is traditional country. There were a dozen or so musicians playing to a full house on Friday night. People were in attendance from as far away as Rochester, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.

A young man named Jackson Bethune highlighted the evening. He is 15 years old and plays banjo, guitar, and bass – and all very well. This is a show worth seeing if you are in the soth Georgia/northeast Florida are.
