KSMU Youth in Bluegrass Band Contest May 28

bbq_thIt’s time again to get those applications ready for the annual KSMU Youth in Bluegrass Band Contest, held each year during the Bluegrass & BBQ festival at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO.

Restricted to young bluegrass groups 21 and under, this competition not only awards serious prize money to the top five contestants, winners are generally hired back in future years to perform during subsequent 4 week Bluegrass & BBQ events.

This year’s contest will be hosted on May 28 at the Silver Dollar City Opera House, and applications to be considered for this invitational competition are due by March 18. Contest rules and applications can be found online.

All performing members of the group must abide by the 21 and under rule, with an exception made for parents of younger children. In any event, it is the ability and performance skill of the young pickers that will be judged.

Only acoustic instruments are allowed, including bass, and no keyboards or drums can be used. A single, large diaphragm microphone and sound system will be provided for each group.

Prize money will be distributed as follows:

  • 1st place – $1500
  • 2nd place – $1000
  • 3rd place – $750
  • 4th place – $500
  • 5th place – $250
