The Grass Cats, the popular bluegrass group based in Raleigh, NC, are celebrating a special anniversary tonight. For the past 11 years, they have without fail played the first Thursday night of each month at Mac’s Tavern in nearby Cary.
And to commemorate this consistent record, the band will also be marking the release of their 9th CD on New Time Records, The Old School Road. Like their prior projects, this one leans heavily on the strong songwriting within the group, and the soaring tenor of founder and mandolinist Russell Johnson.
Another mark of the Grass Cats’ constancy is that in their 18th year together, three of the original five members are still with the band (Johnson, Tim Woodall, and Chris Hill). Other current members are Rick LaFleur and Alan Mullen.
Russell shared a number of photos from Mac’s over the years, starting from shortly after they formed through to last year.
Stop in tonight if you’re in the Raleigh area and celebrate their 133rd show at Mac’s with The Grass Cats.
