Appalachian Smoke’s latest release with Mountain Fever Records tells some of the family history of banjo player and lead singer Mikel Laws, who wrote the song, taken from conversations with a beloved uncle who shared his life story, told with vivid imagery.
Dogwood Hill describes a hardworking family living on a hillside in the Smoky Mountains, living in a small white house where dogwood trees showed the way home. Laws’ uncle’s tale includes service in Viet Nam, detailed in letters home, followed by a joyful reunion upon his return.
With Mikel singing lead and playing banjo, we also hear BJ Taylor on mandolin, and Jamie Mason on guitar, supplemented by Kenneth Rymer on reso-guitar and Aaron Ramsey on bass. Jamie and Kenneth sing harmonies.
Have a listen.
Dogwood Hill is available now from popular download and streaming services online, and to radio programmers via AirPlay Direct.
