Scott Avett with his new Deering banjo, the Avett Truth
Deering Banjos has announced a pair of signature banjo models designed in cooperation with Scott Avett, banjo man with Americana eminences, The Avett Brothers. It will surprise no members of Aventt Nation to learn that these high-grade, professional instruments drift a little off the beaten path.
Since Scott utilizes both three finger and clawhammers sounds on stage, his signature line includes both a resonator and an open back model. Each has its own unique inlay pattern created by Scott, a bit unlike what we expect to see on banjo necks.
The Avett Star is the open back, inspired by the Vega Vintage Star, with its 12” pot assembly for a deeper, throatier sound. A Dobson tone sit atop a Deering 12” rim, offering greater sustain and a less strident attack.
This banjo sells for $2,999.

Its brother, the Avett Truth, is more like a traditional bluegrass-style banjo, but made with a wooden (grenadilla) tone ring, like Deering uses in their John Hartford model. This gives it a distinctive sound, a softer, more subtle tone, which they say is equally effective for lead or backup playing.
It carries a selling price of $5,499.
