Just off her time as lead vocalist with Crandall Creek, Carly Greer is kicking off a solo career with a new song she wrote called Being Poor.
The West Virginia native has been singing since was just a little girl, both bluegrass and country, and has been writing her songs just as long. Greer claims over 300 original compositions, some of which were recorded with Crandall Creek, and her vocal prowess and on-stage swagger helped earn her IBMA Momentum Vocalist of the Year nominations the past two years running.
Written with Stacy Dietz, Being Poor is a solid bluegrass cut about preferring the simple ways, which she says came from wisdom her grandfather shared when she was a child.
“My Paw Paw, one of 17 kids, always told me, ‘There’s a lot of wealth in being poor.’ I didn’t understand it at the time, but now, I realize it had nothing to do with money, but everything to do with survival and the yearning to overcome any obstacle.”
It’s a strong track, well served by Carly’s commanding vocal style, supported by Andy Leftwich on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, Stephen Moore on banjo, and Jamie Peck on bass.
