Stan Foster, a founding visionary of the Bluegrass Radio Network with Terry Herd, and enthusiastic follower of Bluegrass Today, recently took his support to the top of Africa.
While visiting his daughter Megan, a volunteer with the American Peace Corps in Rwanda, the Foster’s tackled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the African continent.
On their summit bid, the father and daughter team donned Bluegrass Today T-shirts under their climbing attire. Braving cold that froze their water bottles on the ascent, the pair revealed their shirts at 6:15 a.m. on December 22, 2012 where this photo was taken by their African guide.
Of the experience, Megan said:
“It was a really awesome and wonderful adventure although exhausting and I am happy it is finished, but I have to say I feel very fortunate and happy that I got to share that experience with my dad (right after his 60th birthday!).”
Megan and Stan Foster were the 254,187 and 254,188th documented visitors to the top of Africa, as recorded by the Kilimanjaro National Park of Tanzania. You can learn more about the adventure and Megan’s volunteer work on her blog.
At 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and is a large stratovolcano. Two of its three peaks, Mawenzi and Shira, are extinct while Kibo (the highest peak) is dormant and could erupt again.
