The central North Carolina bluegrass community in Randolph County has lost another picker. Wesley Hodgin, 78, of Sophia passed away Monday, July 20, 2026. He and his longtime partner, Linda Davis, were on their way for music at Bojangles in Denton when they both were tragically killed in an automobile accident.
Wes followed in the footsteps of his dad, Nim Hodgin, sharing a love for bluegrass and gospel music. That passion led him to play guitar and bass. He also helped host and participate in local jams and music events around his home county. He ran the Sophia Support Club that featured bluegrass bands on the first three Saturday nights of the month and gospel on the fourth Saturday. Proceeds benefited those in need in the community. Before COVID, he also played at Hardees in Randleman and Buddy’s Playhouse in Millboro.
Vernon Allred, banjo picker from Cedar Falls, recalled, “We had a good time. He was a good MC.”
