Real Roots Radio, the broadcasting syndicate owned by Joe Mullins in southern Ohio, has announced some changes to their daily programming schedule.
The network is quite popular, both as a terrestrial broadcasting cartel whose signal goes out from WBZI in Xenia, WEDI in Eaton, and WKFI in Wilmington, and via live streaming from their web site, featuring a mix of classic country, bluegrass, and gospel music.
Now that Mullins has retired from touring with The Radio Ramblers, he has stepped in to host Howdy Neighbor Howdy with Joe Mullins, weekday mornings from 6:00-9:00 a.m. His previous show had run in the afternoons, with Joe having to cancel often when he was on the road.
When the Ramblers were first assembled in 2006, Joe used the group to promote the radio network, and to scratch his bluegrass performance itch which had been somewhat ignored since the dissolution of The Traditional Grass. Of course the band became so popular that it turned into a second full time job for Mullins, and hence, his desire to let one of them go.
Mullins says that it has been a fortuitous opportunity for him.
“I was so fortunate to have a band that worked nearly every event in the roots music community for almost 20 years, but it all started with the Ohio radio audience. The Ramblers organized to entertain at radio network events, and played a lot of fantastic parking lots in the early days!
We were blessed to move to national stages, including the Grand Ole Opry. We produced over a dozen albums and were on the road over 100 days a year.
Now, I’m focused on mornings with that same radio audience that propelled the band and has supported our sponsors, continuously.”
Joe’s son Daniel, a very popular host on Real Roots Radio, is also seeing his broadcast schedule shift a bit. He will host the daily bluegrass hour at 11:00 a.m., and the gospel time show at noon, followed by the Tradin’ Post call in show at 12:30 where folks in southern Ohio can all in to advertise items for sale.
Daniel’s highly-praised show, The Daniel Mullins Midday Music Spectacular, now moves to 1:00-3:00 p.m.
There is also a relatively new program, The New Roots Rundown, presented by Payton Burdette from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. Payton uses these two hours weekly to introduce new music released within the wide roots music sphere.
