A major highlight of our visit to Pickin’ In The Panhandle this past weekend was having the opportunity to chat with Doyle Lawson about his being inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame later this month at the IBMA World of Bluegrass.
Doyle is a bluegrass treasure, an icon with few peers in our music. His professional career spans 50 years, including memorable stints with Jimmy Martin, J.D. Crowe and The Country Gentlemen before launching his own band, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, in 1979. He continues to tour and record briskly with Quicksilver, and at 68 years old, shows no sign of slowing down.
Doyle and the boys got the real star treatment on Sunday. They had performed Saturday night in Claremore, OK, and the only way to make it to West Virginia in time for the 4:00 p.m. show was to come in on a charted flight. So the bus headed for St. Louis and they all hopped on the plane. After their set, it was back onboard for the hop back to meet the bus.
A picker could get used to that.
