Punch Brothers on Leno

Punch Brothers will perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight (6/17). They will be on promoting their brand new CD, Antifogmatic, and playing one of the songs from the album, Rye Whiskey.

It seems that the boys have taken a lesson from the TV appearances for their previous CD (Punch), where they chose the opening track, Punch Bowl, to introduce viewers to their music. That song is very demanding of the listener, consisting of multiple layers of dissonance, and was a hard pill for the average late night TV viewer to swallow. It is a favorite of mine, but I can see where it might put out a lot of people off.

Rye Whiskey, however, is much more accessible and though more complex harmonically that most bluegrass (or pop) music, is based on an old timey-ish riff that draws the listener right into the song. I’ll be very interested to see what sort of reaction they get.

The Tonight Show airs at 11:35 (ET/PT) on NBC, and the music is always in the final segment of the hour-long show. Set your TiVos and DVRs.

Video may be available on Friday morning at the NBC web site.
