Sierra Hull & Highway 111 will be performing live on WSVS radio from Crewe, VA on Saturday afternoon (3/31) at 1:30 p.m. (EDT.
Ms. Hull and the boys have a sold-out show later in the evening in nearby Kenbridge, and will stop by the historic Flatt & Scruggs Studio at WSVS Saturday afternoon to pick and sing a few. If you haven’t heard her latest touring band, be sure to tune in.
The radio show is sponsored in part by the Virginia Museum of Radio Entertainment, located at the WSVS facility, which was the home of the Flatt & Scruggs radio show in 1954. Former bassist Jody Rainwater (Chuck Johnson) took a job there as a DJ after leaving Lester and Earl in 1952, and was instrumental in bringing the band to Crewe where they remained for about six months.
I happened to be driving through Crewe yesterday afternoon, and tuned in to the WSVS afternoon bluegrass program, Bluegrass Depot. As you might expect, was largely dedicated to the legacy of Earl Scruggs. Show host Mel Payne and station manager Chris Gowin spoke at some length about how Earl was a regular visitor to Crewe after the band moved back to Nashville. Scruggs and Rainwater remained close friends, and locals said that it was quite common to find them together in local hotspots long after Flatt & Scruggs had disbanded.
