Old Fiddlers' ConventionThe many winners at the 2013 Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, VA have been posted online. They were actually announced in the wee hours of Sunday morning, at roughly 2:00 a.m., but are now available for all to see.

This annual convention, which just celebrated its 78th year, offers competitions in old time and bluegrass banjo and fiddle, mandolin, guitar, dobro, dulcimer and autoharp, along with a dance contest and one for folk song (singing). Prizes are also awarded for bluegrass and old time band. Ten places are chosen for the individual events and 15 for the bands.

Here are a few of the top placers this year:

  • Jake Krack – old time fiddle
  • Jordon Roberson – dobro
  • Nicolas Goad – mandolin
  • Stephen Fraleigh – bluegrass fiddle
  •  Lee Dunbar- bluegrass banjo
  • Tina Steffey – clawhammer banjo
  • Scott Fore – guitar
  • Leslie Dunbar – folk song
  • High Voltage- bluegrass band
  • New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters – old time band

The Galax Moose Club #733 started hosting the contest in 1935 as a fundraising tool, which now brings thousands of people into town each summer for this mega-convention.
