Shawn Lane is the featured vocalist on a new single release, but it’s not from Blue Highway. It’s not from a new solo project, and it’s not even intended specifically for the bluegrass market.
The song is Clemson-Carolina, written about the enduring intra-state rivalry for college football bragging rights between Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. It was co-written by Mark Stoudenmire, who is also preparing to publish a book on this long-running battle – written from the Clemson perspective – to mark 2008 as the 100th consecutive annual meeting between the two teams.
Stoudenmire is a Knoxville-based songwriter who had previously published a similar book on football at the University of Tennessee, When It’s Football Time in Tennessee.
He commissioned Lane and Al Osteen to compose music to his lyrics, and record the song, which can be heard (and purchased) online.
