Even though last year’s festival was cancelled due to a weekend of inclement weather, the Tallgrass Music Festival came back stronger than ever with a lineup that included Nu-Blu, The Roys and Newton & Thomas. Those headliners were joined by local bands including Common Tyme and The Zoograss Boys, whose members include two of the festival’s founders Larry Nunley, guitar, and Gary Stout, bass. Concordia, Kansas sisters Erin and Amber Rogers, who play as Scenic Roots, conducted a children’s program and also performed traditional fiddle and dulcimer tunes.
Skiatook, Oklahoma, located about 30 miles north of Tulsa, has been home to the festival for ten years and represents a labor of love for Nunley and the other volunteers who make it run. Northeastern Oklahoma is fortunate to have a well run weekend of classic bluegrass music every May in the tallgrass.
