Lonesome River Band in BU

Lonesome River Band is on the cover of the February 2010 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, on newstands now.

The cover feature – plus a sidebar on LRB guitarist/vocalist Brandon Rickman – was written by Chris Stuart, a regular BU contributor and a noted west coast songwriter and bandleader. Chris tells us that he came away from this article with a renewed respect for Sammy Shelor who has managed Lonesome River Band since 2001, and performed with them on banjo since 1990.

“Sammy Shelor, to me, is the consummate professional bandleader. He always looks after the members of his band while still putting out high quality projects and shows. People remember that Carrying the Tradition band so well that it’s hard to remember sometimes that LRB was around long before that band, and has been around long after it. That they’re topping the charts again is because of Sammy’s perseverance as a bandleader. He just never quit.”

The February issue also contains features on New England mandolinist/songwriter Buddy Merriam, Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain, and Virginia legend Freddie Goodhart.
