This past weekend also saw the annual Youth in Bluegrass contest hosted by the Ozark Mountain Music Association in Branson, MO. This competition is for bands whose members are 21 years of age or younger, with the exception of a parent who may be part of a family group.
For many years this contest was sponsored by Silver Dollar City and KSMU radio in Branson, under the direction of D.A. Calloway. When D.A. retired from Silver Dollar City, the competition was picked up by OMMA, who plan to host it in perpetuity.
Only 20 bands are accepted to compete, and they come from all over the US to be a part of this joyful and supportive event.
When all the picking and singing was over, West Virginia’s Strings of Green came out on top. This family group is helmed by well-respected banjo player and instructor Brandon Green, along with three of his sons. Josiah Green (18) plays guitar, Ezekiel Green (12) is on mandolin, with Ezra Green (11) on bass.
Prizes are awarded down to fifth place.
And your 2026 winners are:
- Strings of Green ($2,500)
- The Huckleberries ($2,000)
- Coal Creek Station ($1,500)
- The North Stars ($1,000)
- The Mulkins Family ($500)
Well done and congratulations all!

Strings of Green has a lot more going on right now in addition to this high honor. Today they saw the digital release of their first album, Green on Blue, and they are in the running for the Battle of the Banjos band contest for the Earl Scruggs MusicFest. The voting is strictly online, and the Greens would certainly appreciate your vote.
Hats off to OMMA for preserving this terrific event.
