The DC Bluegrass Union has posted the winners of their inaugural Hazel Dickens Song Contest, just ahead of their big DC Bluegrass Festival later this month.
They were delighted to receive more than 80 entries in this first year, all of which were judged by John Starling, Dudley Connell, and Dede Wyland.
And the winners are:
1st Place: Say What You Mean: writer Gary A. Ferguson, Alexandria, VA
2nd Place: Midnight Flight: writer Nancy Cardwell Erdos, Madison, TN
3rd Place: Weeds Where The Flowers Of Love Once Grew: writers David Morris, Gaithersburg, MD and Chris Dockins, Burke, VA
The audio entries for the winning tracks are posted on the DCBU site. $500 will be awarded for first prize, $250 for second, and $100 for third. As the top songwriter, Gary Ferguson will also be invited to perform his song during the DC Bluegrass Festival on February 28.
Honorable mentions were conveyed for three additional songs:

Barre Angel 1918: writer Tracy O’Connell, Newburyport, MA
