Superstring Theory coming from Andy Statman

Superstring Theory - Andy StatmanAvant-garde mandolinist Andy Statman has announced a new CD, Superstring Theory, set for an October 22 release on Shefa Records.

It was recorded with Staman’s Trio (Jim Whitney on bass and Larry Eagle on drums), along with fiddler Michael Cleveland and guitarist/vocalist Tim O’Brien. All but two tracks are Andy’s originals, composed with this set of musicians in mind.

The bulk of the material is instrumental, and even those that may begin in a sedate manner are eventually given over to Statman’s near-maniacal improvisation, with Cleveland joining in with his own aggressive style. Andy’s clarinet also makes an appearance, twinning with the fiddle on a lovely waltz, before breaking out into a wild klezmer ride.

O’Brien sings Green, Green Rocky Road, an old children’s song whose old time blues vibe is perfectly suited to Tim’s voice and this quirky ensemble.

Look for more details later this month.
