Gary Hultman to The Boxcars

Gary HultmanWith founding member John Bowman having announced his departure from The Boxcars earlier this month, the band has today welcomed new member Gary Hultman to the group.

Gary is a student in the Bluegrass, Country & Old Time Music program at East Tennessee State Universit and will add his resonator guitar, and lead and harmony singing, to the band. Boxcars’ mandolinist Adam Steffey is on the faculty at ETSU, which is where he came to know Hultman, and developed an admiration for his musicianship.

Adam says…

“Although he is young in age, Gary has talent beyond his years. He has the great ability to play what each song needs; never overplaying or showboating, always sensitive to the song and the dynamics that it requires. This is a rare quality in a young player but it seems to come quite naturally to Gary.”

Gary grew up in Birchdale, Minnesota, and played as a teen with his family’s bluegrass band, Sloughgrass. This past semester, he was a member of the ETSU Pride Band, which consists of elite members of the program, as selected by director Dan Boner. He is currently expected to graduate in 2016.

He will start with The Boxcars next week at the Watermelon Wednesdays Concerts in West Whately, Massachusetts. You can find all of their tour dates online.
