Four-Week Bluegrass Bass: Beyond the Basics // Calliope School of Folk Music (Pittsburgh, PA)

Event Details

*This class runs on 10/5, 10/12, 10/26, and 11/2. No class on 10/19.

Ready to move beyond playing roots and fifths all night? This class is designed for bass players who already have a solid command of their instrument and some experience playing bluegrass or other roots music.

We’ll explore ways to add variety and movement to your bass lines while still honoring the bass player’s essential role in the band. Topics will include connecting chords, approaching common changes, expanding your options in different keys, and choosing when to add something extra and when to keep it simple.

This is not a fundamentals class. Participants should be comfortable keeping steady time, following chord changes, and playing basic bluegrass bass lines. If you want to expand your bass-playing vocabulary, make more thoughtful choices, and create parts that are more interesting to play without distracting from the song or the ensemble, this class is for you.
