Amerigrass is an up-and-coming genre in the fast-moving world of modern bluegrass, and some of its most exciting exponents come together on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Minneapolis’ storied venue The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge for the first Amerigrass Fest.
Hosted by the rising Americana-folk-bluegrass-country-rock sextet Maygen & the Birdwatcher (we told you these genres were slippery), Amerigrass Fest also features six hot acts that are sure to expand your mind in the expanding universe of post-bluegrass, futuristic fusion sounds these bands represent so thrillingly – Buffalo Galaxy, The MilBillies, Wild Horses, Ty Pow & the Holy North, Pappa Bear Norton and Dellwood.
Already acclaimed by the Midwest Country Music Association this year for their Bootleggin’ at the Flower Shoppe EP, which garnered awards for best album along with the group’s accolades for artist of the year, Maygen & the Birdwatcher, led by songwriters-singers Maygen Lacey and Noah Neumann, are excited to curate this first foray into recognizing the emergent Amerigrass genre. As Noah Neumann says: “Some artists have more of a city sound and some more rural. But that diversity is what we find so special and unique about our style of music and that we hope to exemplify in Amerigrass.”
Bootleggin’ at the Flower Shoppe shows off the chops of a progressive, eclectic band of adventurers in the realm of old-time, bluegrass and country music. Meanwhile, the other bands who’ll be appearing, rain or shine, at one of Minneapolis’ most celebrated roots-music venues also shine a light into the possibilities creative musicians can find in the timeless practices of string-band playing.
Maygen Lacey cherishes the special community of artists in the beautiful city of Minneapolis, and looks forward to celebrating what each genre, and fusion of genres can bring about at the new event, Amerigrass. “We are big fans of collaboration and love to play with the bands we share the stage with. Music is our love language and we’re very excited to play Amerigrass with the talented array of artists that make-up the lineup this year.”
In addition to their work as curators of Amerigrass, and their acclaimed Bootleggin’ EP – Maygen & Co. have been commissioned by the South Dakota Grassland Coalition to write and record a beautiful song supporting a natural regional cause close to their heart. Details to come later—they’re looking at a mid-October 2023 release date. The Grassland Coalition seeks to improve stewardship of grasslands, preserve ranches and local ranching practices and economy, and encourage sustainable practices.
