Balsam Range to receive NC State honors

Balsam RangeBluegrass and Balsam Range fans are invited to the state capitol in Raleigh, NC tomorrow for a reception and live performance honoring the band.

Statements will be read from both the House and Senate chambers of the state legislature, and the band will be greeted by the Governor and Lt. Governor prior to a public event beginning at noon on June 10. All members of the band are from North Carolina, as is their record label, Mountain Home Music, and the state is recognizing them for their success in the wider bluegrass market.

Balsam Range is the current Entertainer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year, as awarded by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The organization holds their annual business conference and awards show in Raleigh, with the city serving as an eager partner in promoting the events. Now it looks like the state government wants to get in on the act.

The statements from the legislature were sponsored by Senator Jim Davis and Representative Joe Sam Queen.

The band consists of Tim Surrett on bass, Marc Pruett on banjo, Caleb Smith on guitar, Buddy Melton on fiddle, and Darren Nicholson on mandolin.

All of tomorrow’s events are open to the public.
