Handguns from Greensky Bluegrass

Event Details

When I think of Kalamazoo, Michigan, I think of old Gibson guitars and Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. I think my list has one more icon than most folks, and that’s probably because I’m from Michigan myself!  Kalamazoo now and for the forseeable future has an additional claim to fame: Greensky Bluegrass.

We just got a note from their manager, Dave Weissmn, letting us know about the band’s new release, Handguns. The record has just hit the streets so we’ll have a review coming shortly. In the meantime, check out what a stellar year it’s been for GSBG.

  • Their new CD is climbing up the Amazon download charts in three categories, and is currently #1 in the Rock category (a stream of five tracks can be found at Bandcamp).
  • Their ‘played that’ list of performances includes Bonnaroo, Strawberry, NPR Mountain Stage, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Northwest String Summit and many more
  • They were featured in a Rolling Stone review of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco last weekend.
  • Played in front of thousands at the All Good Festival (watch some of it here).

Even though I’m from the mitten state, I haven’t had a chance to check these guys out. And since my childhood friend Chris Carr played bass on their first CD, I have more than one reason to do so. I suggest you do, too.

And stay tuned for our review.
