Special project bands are sprouting all around bluegrass this year. The Masters of Bluegrass have been struttin’ it old school with Bobby Osborne, Del McCoury, J.D. Crowe, Bobby Hicks and Jerry McCoury at festivals, and Sideline, featuring members of Mountain Heart, IIIrd Tyme Out, Darrell Webb Band and Lou Reid & Carolina have a new CD on Rural Rhythm. Jerry Douglas has his Earls of Leicester, with Tim O’Brien, Charlie Cushman, Johnny Warren, Shawn Camp and Barry Bales.
Now comes a new special aggregation made up of some of the top female bluegrass artists in the southeast. After several weeks of batting around band names, they have announced that they will go as Sister Sadie.
The group is built around the powerhouse vocals of three veteran singers: Dale Ann Bradley, Tina Adair and Gena Britt. Joining them will be Beth Lawrence on bass and Deanie Richardson on fiddle, both of whom will also help with the vocals. Britt is playing banjo, Adair mandolin, and Bradley guitar. This will be something to see – and hear!
They have a first show booked at Nashville’s Station Inn on August 30 at 9:00 p.m. (CDT), and are accepting limited show dates starting this Fall. It is expected that Kati Penn-Williams will do some of the shows on fiddle and vocals when Deanie isn’t available.
