Enter The Leeway

Event Details

The LeewayFrom Brooklyn, NY comes another young band using bluegrass instruments to play grass-inflected pop music.

The Leeway describes their style as Indie/Folk, but it seems likely to appeal to fans of modern, experimental bluegrass-based music, which we have described here before as a new dimension of bluegrass.

Their sound is based on the original music and lead vocals of mandolinist Pedro Barquinha, assisted by Mike Robinson on guitar, Bennett Sullivan on banjo, Matt Rousseau on bass, and Dominic Mekky on piano. Pedro mentioned that theirs was a traditional bluegrass ensemble format, but swapping the fiddle for a piano.

Robinson also contributed a song on their self-titled debut EP, released earlier this month, and Sullivan has a co-write with Barquinha.

The guys take turns explaining how the band came together in this video shot during the tracking sessions.

Have a listen to the album via band camp.
