Newell Lodge Fall Festival falls victim to Matthew

Like most folks in the southeastern United States, we spent much of last week watching hurricane Matthew as he crept ever closer to landfall. With the storm past, the devastation is clear in the photos and videos of the damage left behind.

Outdoor events by the score were cancelled, from weddings to sporting events to even larger community events, like bluegrass festivals.

Our friend Ernie Evans in Florida shared this story about the Newell Lodge Fall Bluegrass Festival, scheduled to run October 5-9 in Folkston, GA. The festival is managed by Evans and his partner, his wife Debi, and as it became clear that Matthew was aimed at the eastern seaboard, the possibility of having to cancel became their top concern.

“Watching the weather is as much of a part of what we do as anything that goes into a festival. When the threat of bad weather begins, we start to plan accordingly. However, the threat of a hurricane makes this task monumental. The unknowns and responsibility that comes next will take age off a person at warp speed.

First, you are lucky in one sense that you get an advanced warning with plenty of time to prepare. However, you don’t know at the time that the storm will even hit in your area so you don’t want a knee jerk reaction by cancelling. This can disappoint fans, leave bands without work, cost promoters marketing dollar but most of all, ruin something we work hard all year for and look so forward to. Next, you set a deadline for making a final decision one way or another because most, if not all festivals, advertise ‘Rain or Shine.’ If you cancel and it only rains, well… that’s better than a hurricane but not the answer, if you can help it.

Now, I should mention that ‘Safety’ is always first, and not just in the case of a hurricane.

It didn’t take long to figure out that we were dealing with a potentially serious threat with Hurricane Mathew. It wasn’t a storm that we could take a lot of time to plan for. After Debi and I discussed a plan of action, we immediately contacted the owners of Newell Lodge to see what they wanted to do.

At the time the threat was looking serious. Camping customers were already arriving to the festival site. Together, we decided that we would wait until the next weather report came out with the latest forecast. This would be the last chance to inform the bands before making their long journey to our venue from VA, PA, KY and other areas. When the report came out, it was time to start calling to give folks a chance to get home to get their homes prepared, and plenty of time to evacuate. The cancellation went pretty smoothly, but it did not come as a surprise.

Unfortunately, this was the last festival to be held by Evans Media Source for the owners of Newell Lodge for a while. On May 11th of this year we had received an email from the owner of Newell Lodge informing us that it was going to be difficult to go forward. We were encouraged to seek another alternative, and that is what we had decided to do after this past scheduled date that had to be canceled. Newell Lodge will continue to operate as a resort and lease the facilities for other events.

The good news is, Evans Media Source has many other events that our bluegrass family will be able to enjoy – the same bands soon in the same season.

Evans Media Source has rolled out a new line of events called Ameri-fest that will be shared in more detail in the near future. In short, it is a festival that celebrates the culture of American Heritage through food, crafts and live entertainment while cultivating interest for new fans to bluegrass. In the immediate future, we are getting ready for our next bluegrass festival in Okeechobee, Florida called Yeehaw Music Fest with The Gibson Brothers, IIIrd Tyme Out, Monroe Crossing, Nothin Fancy, and Remington Ryde just to name a few.

As for our current status due to Hurricane Mathew… Our team at Evans Media Source would like to send out our heart felt sympathy to all of the people with damage to their homes and their work place, or left without power. This has been a very eye opening experience, but we are here to help any way we can. Anyone that has experienced a major loss does not have to worry about not being able to afford our festivals. We started this business to share it with you all, and that vision has not changed. If you have experienced hardship due to devastation by the hurricane, please call us. You will need bluegrass more than ever we will do all we can to make sure you can continue to enjoy our shows.”

Ernie also mentioned that they were unable to do their regular Sunday afternoon radio show on WFCF yesterday after power was lost on the campus of Flagler College which houses the station. The school has had to cancel classes at least until Thursday of this week, so hopefully The Sunday Afternoon Breakdown will be back next weekend.

Evans Media Source can be reached by email or phone (904-886-8378) should you have any concerns about the cancellation, or upcoming festival and music events.

Newell Lodge 2015

The weekend of October 10th saw the first Newell Lodge bluegrass festival promoted by Ernie and Debi Evans. They are now working with Harvin Carter and his family to promote festivals on this site in Folkston, GA.

This first effort was very successful with the campground sold out in advance of the festival. The weather was very good, and the entertainment was superb.

Festivities started Wednesday evening with a fish fry and potluck, followed by an open stage and karaoke hosted by Greg Bird. Thursday saw the first band shows. Unfortunate circumstances caused two of the scheduled bands to have to cancel. Nothin’ Fancy and Chris Henry & Hardcore Grass filled in. Tuck Tucker and Chris Henry did a couple sets as a duo. Tuck, a songwriter and top-notch dobro player based in Florida, had played with Chris’ parents, Red and Murphy Henry, in the early 80’s.

A youngster came up to jam backstage with Chris. They jammed and Chris was so impressed, he brought the young man on stage during his final set to play. Local band, Blast of Grass performed a couple sets of music. Remington Ryde from Pennsylvania spent two days performing. The Little Roy & Lizzie Show closed out on Saturday. Little Roy is still the highest energy person in bluegrass music!

Newell Lodge along with Ernie and Debi Evans will host its first Gospel festival this weekend, October 29, 30, and 31.

Changing of the guard at Newell Lodge Bluegrass Festival

Following this past weekend’s festival at the Newell Resort in Folkston, GA, it has been announced that the festivals there will be run going forward as a partnership between the Carter family who owns the property, and Ernie and Debi Evans, who manage a string of festivals in Florida and Georgia through their company, Evans Media Source.

Ashley Carter will be responsible for the facility and lodge operations, and Ernie will handle booking and promotions, plus stage management during the festival. There are no firm plans to change the festival date, though discussions about moving the Spring festival into April are ongoing.

The next bluegrass show at Newell Lodge will be October 8-11, 2015.

The Wilson family, who had previously helped in running the festival, shared this statement of appreciation to all the fans and attendees they had served over the years.

“Over the past five years of assisting the Carter Family in establishing the Newell Lodge Bluegrass Festival by booking entertainment, running sound, and various promotional endeavors, we have prided ourselves in producing a high quality event, featuring some of bluegrass music’s classiest artists. With the conclusion of last weekend’s event, the Wilson Family (Clint, Robert, and Melissa) will no longer be affiliated with the Newell Lodge Bluegrass Festival, due to changes in personal priorities and a change in direction at Newell Lodge.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years. Your support and friendship has been invaluable to us. We would also like to thank Harvin Carter for trusting our opinions and for giving bluegrass a chance at this beautiful venue.”

Ashley is taking charge as her father, Harvin Carter looks toward retirement. She has been working alongside her dad this past six years in all aspects of the business, and is ready for her new responsibilities.

“I’m sorry to see the Wilson family leave, but I am so excited about the new opportunities and the exceptional lineups we have in store for bluegrass enthusiasts. The Evans’ bring many years of passion and experience to the table and combined with all the investments, hospitality and picturesque surrounding we have built from the ground up, we feel our vision is on course to be fulfilled. We have already had a great response on our next show that will be held October 8-11, 2015 and by popular demand, fans will enjoy Nothin’ Fancy, Little Roy & Lizzie, The Moron Brothers, Blast of Grass, Gentlemen of Bluegrass, Greg Byrd, Jan Lad and Tuck Tucker. It’s going to be great!”

And her dad has no doubts that she is ready…

“This is a great opportunity for Newell Lodge Bluegrass to broaden its assortment of bands, while providing quality entertainment for our bluegrass supporters. I am hoping, these changes will allow this part of our business to become self-supporting.  I have confidence in Ashley and will support her 110%, as she undertakes this new role.”

Ernie shared some details about his company’s part in the proceedings from here on.

“My responsibilities are to act as an event planner on selected music events. I will be booking bands, managing the stage and working hand and hand with Ashley Carter. Debi and I will also be on site working and assisting from the ticket booth to the porta johns. It is a great opportunity for our company and custom fit for what we have geared our company to do.

We specialize in festival services from budgeting, talent scouting/procurement, site planning and facilitating, marketing all the way to the closing day. We have services that can handle any component of a festival to turn keying the entire event including box office.

Ashley Carter is a very bright young lady with a lot of responsibility and has impressed us thus far. Debi and I have enjoyed working with her and also see a bright future. It’s always a good situation when bluegrass wins again!”

It sounds like a great festival has a strong new team in place for future events at Newell Lodge. Find full details online.

On a related Ernie Evans note…

Ernie says that his bout with bladder cancer is continuing to show success. He’s 8 weeks past his last surgery, and doctor’s reports have been positive. Some pain and soreness remains, but Debi says it’s because he won’t slow down and rest!

A benefit concert is scheduled for this weekend to help Ernie and Debi with associated medical expenses. It will be held in the American legion Hall in Plymouth, OH on March 28 starting at noon. Featured entertainers include Paul Bryant & Kentucky Border, Harold Hamilton and Southern Tradition, Fossil Creek, Whitaker Brothers, Larry Efaw and the Bluegrass Mountaineers, Kenny Stinson and Perfect Tymn, Kevin Prater Band, Caney Creek, Travers Chandler and Avery Countya and Ralph Stanley II.

Those details can be found on Facebook.
