The Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival has finished its 2024 run. MC Arlin Bradford kept the show moving while new promoter Larry Efaw’s crew worked hard to keep everything smooth.

Host band, Larry Efaw & the Bluegrass Mountaineers opened the Friday stage show. They provide old time mountain music in the style of Ralph Stanley.

Lorraine Jordan brought the Carolina Road boys to the show. Her stay was cut short as her father, Royce, took ill and they needed to head for home. Our thoughts and prayers go out for Royce’s quick recovery. Danny Paisley and Junior Sisk joined Lorraine to sing their hit, Why Can’t Bluegrass Be Truegrass Again.

Danny and his band, The Southern Grass, gave full measure of the old time style that the Paisley and Lundy families have nurtured over many years.

Junior followed with his brand of Virginia bluegrass. He and Danny have both been selected as IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year in the past. Both are well deserving. Junior’s band, with his blessing, are recording under the Red Camel Collective name. Heather Berry Mabe is one of the strongest vocalists on the bluegrass circuit. They will be doing a few shows down the road.

The Lonesome River Band closed out the Friday stage show. Sammy Shelor has recruited one of the strongest bands playing today. LRB has been a top shelf band for over 40 years.

Saturday kicked off with performances from Tomorrow’s Bluegrass Stars. Youngsters from Pennsylvania, Canada, and Michigan presented music. They all joined together for a grand finale. It is always a pleasure to see youngsters smiling and playing bluegrass music!

The previous host band and promoter of the festival, Remington Ryde with Ryan Frankhouser, followed the youngsters – this is always a difficult spot. 😊They put on a fine show. Ryan always honors the late James King by singing several of his tunes.

The Feinberg Brothers also came in from Long Island, New York to entertain the Grange Park crowd. This was a new band to me and I enjoyed their music.

Larry Efaw brought his band back for Saturday sets and more old time bluegrass.

Nothin’ Fancy got all the way to their end of their first set when the MC announced that a storm was moving in, and the evening sets would be delayed a bit. Less than a minute later the storm hit with sixty mile per hour wind and sideways rain. One of the few popup tents to survive the wind was the sound crews tent over the sound board. The rest in the stage area were a tangled mess. Many of us sat under the big tents until the storm passed. They survived well.

The show was delayed for a couple of hours. The sound crew went to work and dried out all of their equipment and reset the stage. Larry, his crew, and the sound guys did an excellent job of getting the show up and running in the evening. Rhonda Vincent & the Rage opened the evening show and came back later and closed out the festival. Rhonda’s daughter, Sally, was at the show. She and her daughter, Faye Monroe, joined Rhonda on stage to sing a couple tunes. Faye’s eyes were glued to the mandolin. At the end of her first set Rhonda was surprised by Tomorrow’s Bluegrass Stars who presented her with their Mentor of the Year award. She was delighted and surprised.

Larry is already planning next year’s show. Stay tuned for the details.

Thursday at the 2024 Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival

Thursday dawned bright and sunny at Grange Park in Centre Hall, PA.

The day’s show opened with open stage performances by three family groups.

Then Corey Zink brought on his band from east Tennessee. Corey provides the audience with a good mix of bluegrass and traditional country music. His son is playing bass and singing with the group. This young man is a rising star.

The Edgar Loudermilk Band had quite a time making the show. They had played in Arizona and were driving to Centre Hall. The bus broke down in Arizona and parts needed to be ordered. A friend took their instruments home and the band flew out of Las Vegas to Pittsburgh. They then drove to the show where Little Roy and Lizzy lent them instruments to play the show. That shows the dedication bluegrass musicians have!

Larry Stephenson brought his band in from New York City after recording a show for Sirius/XM radio. Larry’s show is always top notch.

Little Roy Lewis is still fueled by the Energizer Bunny. The show has added Mikayla Burrows on guitar. She provides powerful harmony with Lizzy.

The Malpass Brothers closed out the show with their great traditional country music, and brother fued antics.

Friday and Saturday promise more great music including Larry Efaw, Lorraine Jordan, Danny Paisley, Junior Sisk, Lonesome River Band, Remington Ryde, The Feinberg Brothers, Nothin’ Fancy, and Rhonda Vincent.

There is still time to join us for two days of great music.

2023 Remington Ryde Fest wrap up

We are home after two weeks on the road at two festivals. The Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival is now under the guidance of Larry Efaw. He has taken over from Ryan Frankhouser and has kept the festival growing. Larry said there were over a thousand campers on site. I doubt anyone failed to have a good time. Rain threatened on and off throughout the weekend, and finally came down about five minutes after Rhonda Vincent finished her last song on Saturday night. It was dry by Sunday morning.

The Saturday kids performance was a highlight of the show. A group of youngsters spent time Thursday and Friday preparing a set that ran nearly ninety minutes. They played and sang individually and in groups, with a couple of them groups as families. Pennsylvania bluegrass is in good hands.

The rest of Friday and Saturday was a whirlwind of excitement and emotions.

Larry Stephenson closed his sets with The Sound That Set My Soul On Fire in tribute to The Osborne Brothers.

I found myself reminiscing through various performances. Five young adults have gone from teenagers to sailors playing the biggest stages with the U.S. Navy Band Country Current. I watched Stanley Efaw as an eight year old playing mandolin with his Dad at a hundred miles and hour. Now he’s a Clinch Mountain Boy. Rhonda has gone from the young mother on top of her game to a grandmother who is still the very best.

I guess the passings of Jesse McReynolds and Bobby Osborne in less than a week gave us all pause and time to reflect. They were both fondly remembered by all of the performers at Remington Ryde.

Centre Hall, Pennsylvania will be the place to be again in one short year.

The haze from the Canadian wildfire smoke was nearly gone Thursday making for a pleasant day for the Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival. The MC duties were shared by Mikayla Burrows, Adam Burrows, and Ryan Frankhouser.

Circa Blue was first up. Their bio calls them a contemporary bluegrass band. They are that, with a healthy dose of traditional bluegrass music mixed in.

The Bluegrass Mountaineers are the host band. Larry Efaw follows in the old mountain sound of Ralph Stanley. He has surrounded himself with some of the best young talent on the bluegrass circuit.

Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers are celebrating fifteen years as one of the top rated bands in the genre.

Then there is the Little Roy & Lizzy Show. Roy’s 80+ years are belied by the teenage energy he brings to the stage. Lizzy brings back memories of Polly Lewis when the band does some of the Lewis Family music.

The Malpass Brothers closed out the Thursday show bringing the audience a full measure of traditional country music and humor.

Friday and Saturday bring a wide variety of bands to the show.

Head for Centre Hall, PA to be completely entertained for the rest of the weekend.

The Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival kicked off Wednesday at the Centre Hall Grange Fairgrounds in Centre Hall, PA. Larry Efaw has taken the reins promoting the festival. Ryan Frankhouser and Larry are sharing the MC duties.

The Canadian wildfires made for an overcast, smoky day. Similar reports were coming in from all over the Midwest. Traci Chichester of GBS Sound reported that traffic lights in Marietta, Ohio were difficult to see in the haze. Thursday has dawned bright and clear, and the big crowd is eagerly awaiting another day of excellent music.

The Wednesday show featured the Kevin Prater Band, The Kody Norris Show, and Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass. Each of the bands honored both Jesse McReynolds and Bobby Osborne.

Thursday will feature Circa Blue, Larry Efaw & the Bluegrass Mountaineers, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, The Little Roy and Lizzy Show, and the Malpass Brothers. The evening will be capped off with an open jam hosted by Little Roy and Lizzy.

Head for Centre Hall for a fun weekend of music. There are four big tents for shade and lots of vendors for food and shopping.
