Speaking today with Tony’s wife, Pamela, we learned how disappointed he is when an appearance must be canceled, owing to his deep and sincere affection for his many fans. Though a notoriously private person, Pam shared how truly sorry Tony is about missing shows, and being unable to live up to his scheduled commitments.
This is a man who gives his all on stage, even when hand and joint pain make guitar playing difficult, and who would make his way to a show through rain, snow or discomfort wherever possible. Comments have been seen online of late suggesting that Rice hadn’t given his best at a show, and noting that he would leave the stage from time to time, or turn down an encore. The plain fact is that performing is a strain for him these days, but he isn’t the sort to look for pity from an audience.
Pam is doing her best to keep him well fed and rested, and Tony will be back on stage where he most loves to be as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the Travelin’ McCourys are bringing Cody Kilby along for the 100 Years of Bill Monroe shows this weekend.
