Galloway was a Confederate soldier who fought in several major engagements, including the decisive battle of Gettysburg. In Petersburg he took a musket ball to the head, but was rescued from the battlefield by Union soldiers and received treatment at a POW hospital in Washington.
The story goes that while recovering, Flem met President Lincoln, who approached his bedside and asked, “how long will you fight us Johnny Reb?” Flew is said to have told him, “’til the mountains fall down or General Robert E. Lee commands it, sir.”
After the war, Flem was sent by train to Greenville, SC, and from there, he walked back up the mountain to his home in Rosman, NC. There he built a home and lived out the rest of his life.
